Permanent Exhibits

Children's Discovery Center

The Discovery Center offers pre-school and elementary children the opportunity to learn while playing in special exhibits including Poage Landing: Life on the River, The Frank and Margaret Adkins Aviation Exhibit, The Front Porch and The Riverbank. Don't miss our FETCH! Lab , based on the popular children's educational television show FETCH! With Ruff Ruffman, with interactive activities for children.

A Tree House of My Own, sponsored by Dr. and Mrs. Ish Stevens. What do you see when you're up in a tree? Learn about the natural world around us! Bugs and beetles, butterflies and snakes, animals and birds, plants and flowers all take their place in this Discovery Center exhibit.

 

 

River Expedition: new permanent exhibit in the Discovery Center . Travel the Ohio River and explore the natural history of life along the Ohio . Young explorers will take a close-up look at boats and bridges, fish, frogs and tents. Become a caver and investigate Discovery Cavern to learn about caves and coal. Designed especially for ages 5-11. Sponsored by Duke Energy, Wal Mart, Sunoco, The Putnam Agency, Liebert, DTR, Inc. Country Music Heritage Exhibit

The popular Country Music Heritage exhibit features memorabilia and biographies of several well-known country music artists who came from towns either on or near US 23, including Loretta Lynn; Crystal Gayle; Ricky Skaggs; Keith Whitley; Hylo Brown; Billy Ray Cyrus and his daughter, Miley Cyrus of the hit Disney show Hannah Montana; Patty Loveless; Tom T. Hall; and Naomi, Wynonna and Ashley Judd. This exhibit also includes the Music Quilt, an interative wooden sculpture that makes everyone a musician!

 

 

 

History and Heritage Exhibits

The Museum features many history exhibits, such as the C. I Haeberle Medical Exhibit, The World at War: Answering the Call, School Daze, Steel Rails and (opening May 16, 2008) Digging Deeper.

C.I. Haeberle Medical Exhibit

Step into a world when late night house calls were made on horseback and payment was in chickens and produce. Note the instruments and products of local drugstores along with the medical equipment from doctors of a century ago.

The World at War: Answering the Call

The Appalachian region has always given up its sons and daughters to war. Reflect on the public and private sacrifices made by the men and women who fought during the wars of the twentieth century. Meet families and friends and recall the impact of the war years on the generations that followed.

School Daze

Visit a ninteenth century classroom. Dress in clothes of the era and become a student or teacher of the 1870's.

Steel Rails

Learn about the early beginnings of the transportation and manufacturing that made Ashland into a boomtown.

Coming Home: A Retrospective of Paintings by Joyce Williams

Coming Home: A Retrospective of Paintings by Joyce Williams: Come and view the wonderful paintings by award winning artist Joyce Williams. Twenty-eight of Mrs. Williams' paintings are now on display in the museum's offices and in the Cecil Fannin Family Events and Exhibits Hall. A cataloge of the full collection is also available upon request in the museum office. In addition, many of the paintings in the collection are available for sale. Please contact the museum office for more information.

 

Mr. Lincoln's War: The Civil War in Eastern Kentucky

A new museum exhibit concentrating on the impact of President Lincoln's policies on the Eastern Kentucky region. Learn about those who went to fight and those who were left behind.

2008 Student Art Show

See Picasso-style self portraits created by area students displayed in the Cecil Fannin Family Events and Exhibits Hall. Portrats were chosen from a selection of works created during our March workshop "When I Grow Up: Self Portraits for the Future". April 19 through May 10, 2008.
