Digging Deeper Exhibit Opening: Who were the first people to inhabit this area? See and become a part of a Native American village. Perform an archeological dig or map out a dig site. May 16, 2008 at 12:00 PM

Special Exhibits:

Coming Home: A Retrospective of Paintings by Joyce Williams: Coming Home: A Retrospective of Paintings by Joyce Williams: Come and view the wonderful paintings by award winning artist Joyce Williams. Twenty-eight of Mrs. Williams' paintings are now on display in the museum's offices and in the Cecil Fannin Family Events and Exhibits Hall. A cataloge of the full collection is also available upon request in the museum office. In addition, many of the paintings in the collection are available for sale. Please contact the museum office for more information.

Mr. Lincoln's War: The Civil War in Eastern Kentucky: A new museum exhibit concentrating on the impact of President Lincoln's policies on the Eastern Kentucky region. Learn about those who went to fight and those who were left behind.

Student Special Events:

FETCH! Challenge Lab: Each Saturday, try activities from 11 am-3 pm that you've seen on PBS's FETCH! with Ruff Ruffman. Free with regular admission.

River Expedition: New in the Discovery Center. Visitors will travel the Ohio River and explore its natural history. Young explorers will take a close-up look at boats and bridges, fish, frogs and tents. Cavers can investigate Discovery Cavern to learn about caves and coal. Designed especially for ages 5-11. Sponsored by Duke Energy, Wal Mart, Sunoco, The Putnam Agency, Liebert, DTR, Inc. Sun Chemical, Marathon Petroleum Company LLC, Rotary Club of Ashland , and Dtr Inc

 

Ongoing Exhibits:

A Tree House of My Own: . What do you see when you're up in a tree? Learn about the natural world around us! Bugs and beetles, butterflies and snakes, animals and birds, plants and flowers all take their place in your own backyard. Exhibit sponsored by Dr. and Mrs. Ish Stevens.

The Front Porch: What did we do for fun before computers and TV? Before air-conditioning and the mall? Try some time honored games and traditions, plus a chance to visit with your neighbors in a swing or catch a cool breeze in a rocker. Come “sit a while” and reflect on a leisurely part of times past.

Frank and Margaret Adkins Aviation exhibit – Visit this exciting ongoing exhibit in the museum's Discovery Center , which features airplanes, a wind tunnel and hands-on activities focusing on the history of flight.

Poage's Landing: Life on the RiverLearn about how people live and the jobs they do along the Ohio River in this ongoing exhibit. Visitors can pilot “Little Joe,” an actual towboat. Explore the streetscape of Poage's Landing and imagine yourself to be a banker, a grocer, a chef, a doctor or an EMT!

River Expedition: new permanent exhibit in the Discovery Center. Travel the Ohio River and explore the natural history of life along the Ohio. Country Music Heritage Hall: Explore the memorabilia of well-known country music artists and local singer songwriters who came from towns on US 23. Learn more about Keith Whitley, Loretta Lynn, Crystal Gayle, Ricky Skaggs, Hylo Brown, Miley & Billy Ray Cyrus, Patty Loveless, Tom T. Hall, and Naomi, Wynonna and Ashley Judd. Play the Music Quilt where everyone can be a musician!

C.I. Haeberle Medical Exhibit: Step into the world when late night housecalls were made on horseback and payment was made with chickens and produce. Note the instruments and products of local drugstores, along with the medical equipment from doctors of a century ago.

The World at War: Answering the Call:The Appalachian region has always given up its sons and daughters to war. Reflect on the public and private sacrifices made by the men and women who fought during the wars of the twentieth century.

School Daze: Visit a nineteenth century classroom. Dress in clothes of the era and become a student or teacher of the 1870's.

Steel Rails: Learn about the early beginnings of the transportation and manufacturing that made Ashland into a boomtown.
