Descriptions and Objectives
Unless otherwise indicated, pricing for all Discovery Workshops is $3.50 per student, $2.50 per parents/adult chaperones, and teachers and other school staff (including administrators, teacher’s aides, bus drivers, etc) are admitted free.
Digging Event Deeper (Gr. K-6) Dig deeper as you investigate the past. Learn how archeologists use artifacts and other clues to determine how ancient people lived. Design and create a Native American winter count using symbols similar to Native American glyphs. Back to School Daze (Gr. K-6) Enter the museum’s new one-room schoolhouse exhibit and become a student in a nineteenth century classroom. Let our schoolmaster lead you through a day of learning. Slime Time (Gr. 2-6) Is it a solid or is it a liquid? Learn the definition of a non-Newtonian substance and find out how they are used in everyday life. Make a cup of slime to take home.

Sound Waves (Gr. K-6) What makes the sounds you hear? How do they get to your ears? Learn about sound waves and how they create the noises and music you hear every day. Decorate and put together a paper plate tambourine. Spring Student Art Show –Abstract Expressionism: Jackson Pollock and Friends Discover what makes abstract expressionism so unique. Learn about the artists that created abstract expressionism art and create a Jackson Pollock-like work. Artwork from this workshop will automatically be considered for the museum’s April 2010 student art show. This workshop will be offered from March 2, 2010 until March 26, 2010. Black History Month 2010 –Kentucky’s Abraham Lincoln: Lawyer, Statesman, Emancipator Hear the story on Abraham Lincoln, from his birth in a log cabin in western Kentucky to his presidency. Find out how Lincoln became one of the greatest Presidents in American history. Create an Abraham Lincoln themed art project. STARLAB Presentations
Learn about astronomy with one of the following presentations in our portable planetarium! The Night Sky, Native American Constellations, Greek Mythology, Weather Patterns of the World or African Constellations and Mythology. SPECIAL NOTE: Due to the space requirements for the Beyond the Log Cabin exhibit, STARLAB workshops will not be offered in the museum from September 14, 2009 until March 2, 2010. STARLAB workshops will still be available as an Outreach Discovery Workshop during this time.

STARLAB Training for Teachers
Please call for more information or to schedule a time.
Learn the mechanics of teaching STARLAB, the portable planetarium and leave with information, samples and literature to integrate astronomy and the stars into classroom presentations.
